Donald Trump’s Call To Ban Muslim Entry Into America

In his latest call to “Make America Great Again” Donald J. Trump has decided to do what he does best: scapegoat a group of people to move the polls, pad his pockets and perhaps, just maybe, show America who we’ve have become, or perhaps have always been.

Earlier this week I opined that part of the discomfort with Trump,  is his ability to expose the truth about the moral fabric of America. We are a country that is deeply racist, capitalistic, materialist, nativist, anti-black, non-critical/nuanced, anti-gay/queer/trans, patriarchal, ableist and sexist that depends on the bravado of money and military might to sanction our violences and further authenticate our power.

He became a billionaire by playing by the American rules. He espouses uncomfortable ideologies that are often unstated in polite company but foundational to national policy, sexual preferences/politics and international affairs. It’s quite refreshing. I’d never vote for him, but I see Amerikkka in his rhetoric.

Trump has again turned his attention to people of the Islamic faith. It is not often that you’ll find me defending a religion–being the agnostic humanist that I am–but when the humanity of a group of people is denigrated in my name, I feel compelled to say otherwise. There are folks around the world, religious, areligious and agnostic that are wonderful, kind and gracious. There are also folks–many of which are Christian and here in Amerikkka–that are murderous, cunning and perhaps beyond repair in this lifetime. However, the blood that is shed is not simply on that person physically wielding the weapon but on the communities, the nations, the world that has led someone to believe or exist in a state of mind that convinces them that destruction is the only way to peace or freedom. Our work then, not only rests in the denunciation of Trump and his ilk, but also in our (in)actions, individual, collection and as a nation, that erode the quality of life of people we have never met. We must be careful about what we consume, energy and food, and its effects on folks around the world. We must consider not only the economic and human costs of war for America, but also the folks in close proximity, just trying to get by. We must recall, that every privilege has a cost, even when we are not there to see borne.

If freedom means anything, anything at all, it cannot mean be a right of one person or group of peoples, to assail, maim and dehumanize another without the world rising to cause of interconnected humanization. When one of us is marked, or imprisoned in stereotypes and controlling images, the others are not far from the same destiny. Such markers require stability, rules and ideologies of engagement. Our freedoms–from state and other–require a mutual pact of defense, from the violence of state and other-ing. Now is the time to stand and yes, to Make America Great This Time.

Banning Muslims from entry to America, will not solve the issue of gun violence or non-state violence here, or anywhere else. This is tantamount to performing heart surgery to require a brain tumor. This is an issue of ideology and power, not one of religion or ethnicity.

(New York, NY) December 7th, 2015, — Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country’s representatives can figure out what is going on. According to Pew Research, among others, there is great hatred towards Americans by large segments of the Muslim population. Most recently, a poll from the Center for Security Policy released data showing “25% of those polled agreed that violence against Americans here in the United States is justified as a part of the global jihad” and 51% of those polled, “agreed that Muslims in America should have the choice of being governed according to Shariah.” Shariah authorizes such atrocities as murder against non-believers who won’t convert, beheadings and more unthinkable acts that pose great harm to Americans, especially women.

Mr. Trump stated, “Without looking at the various polling data, it is obvious to anybody the hatred is beyond comprehension. Where this hatred comes from and why we will have to determine. Until we are able to determine and understand this problem and the dangerous threat it poses, our country cannot be the victims of horrendous attacks by people that believe only in Jihad, and have no sense of reason or respect for human life. If I win the election for President, we are going to Make America Great Again.” – Donald J. Trump
